When people ask me why I wanted to be in veterinary medicine, I have a different response than most. I love problem solving, providing wellness and emergency care to pets, and communicating with people. But my heart is touched each time I am able to help a beloved pet and their loving family navigate end of life care.

End of life care has many aspects. Managing pain is key and unique to each pet. Listening to the goals and concerns of everyone involved is so important. Counseling an individual or family through the choices and decisions to be made is painstaking. Sharing experiences to help them not feel alone or criticized is critical. And in the end, helping to ease suffering and being a shoulder for the grieving soul as they pass on is heart wrenching.

I am often asked how I could ever do this part of our job and not be overwhelmed by sadness. I feel sad each time and I weep with clients often because I care for and become attached to my patients. But I am always reminded that these pets have such devoted people, have loved them unconditionally, and deserve our best when the time comes. It is my honor to provide that care for them.
